The owner tells the people who only knew how to peel potatoes that they aren’t needed for that task anymore. That feels scary and sad. But at the same time, the owner starts looking for new people. They need someone to clean the machine, someone to tell the machine which potatoes are the best, and someone to create new, delicious recipes now that the potato peeling is done so fast. This is exactly what is happening in the world of big offices and computers right now.
The truth about AI is that it feels like a giant puzzle where the pieces are moving while we try to put them together. Since we entered 2026, many people have seen news stories that make their hearts beat a little faster. On one side, we hear about big companies letting go of hundreds of workers. On the other side, those same companies are putting out “Help Wanted” signs for brand-new types of jobs. It can make you feel like you are walking on a boat during a storm.
You might ask, “If the company is firing people, why are they hiring others at the same time?” It feels like a contradiction, doesn’t it? It is like a person throwing away their old shoes while buying a new pair of boots. They still need footwear, but the “weather” of the business world has changed. They are moving away from tasks that a computer can do alone and moving toward tasks where a human and a computer work together like a team.
When we talk about AI job displacement, we are talking about the “potato peeling” tasks. These are the jobs that are the same every single day. If a job involves following the exact same steps over and over—like sorting papers, entering numbers into a box, or answering the same three questions on a phone—a computer can now do it very cheaply.
Think of Artificial Intelligence as a very fast, very obedient student who never sleeps. If you show this student how to do a simple task, they will do it forever without getting bored.
Because of this, companies are going through what experts call corporate restructuring. This is just a fancy way of saying they are changing the way their “kitchen” works. They are letting the computers handle the repetitive parts so they can save money.
It is easy to think that companies are just being cold-hearted. While it is true that losing a job is very painful, these companies are often trying to survive. If one bakery uses the potato machine and the other bakery still pays ten people to peel by hand, the first bakery can sell its food for much less money. Eventually, the second bakery would have to close down completely. Companies feel they must use AI to keep their doors open in the future of work.

Now, let’s talk about the good news. While some doors are closing, many others are swinging wide open. This is where hiring for AI skills comes into play. Even though the computer is fast, it is actually quite “silly” in some ways. It doesn’t have common sense. It doesn’t know what a “joke” is, and it doesn’t know how to care about a customer’s feelings.
Have you ever tried to talk to a dog? You have to use certain words and a certain tone for the dog to understand “Sit” or “Stay.” AI is a bit like that. Companies are now hiring thousands of people whose only job is to “talk” to the AI. These people are often called “Prompt Engineers,” but we can think of them as AI Whisperers.
They spend their day figuring out the best way to ask the computer a question so that the answer is perfect. This isn’t a job that existed a few years ago! It requires a human who is creative, patient, and good at explaining things.
Another big area of hiring is called “Data Labeling.” Imagine you have a giant pile of photos of cats and dogs. The computer doesn’t know which is which. A human has to sit down and click “Cat” or “Dog” thousands of times to teach the computer. This is called “Training the Model.”
Even in 2026, the smartest computers still need humans to be their teachers. Companies are hiring people all over the world to be these “digital teachers.” It is a vital part of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
As computers take over the “robotic” parts of our jobs, the parts that make us human become worth more than gold. This is a very important part of the truth about AI.
Think about a nurse in a hospital. A robot might be able to bring a tray of medicine to a room (that’s the “robotic” task). But a robot cannot hold a patient’s hand, look them in the eye, and say, “I know you’re scared, but I’m here with you.” That feeling of connection is something a computer can never do.
If your job involves these things, you are in a very good spot:
Companies are hiring more people for these roles because they want to stand out. If every company uses the same AI to write their emails, the company that has a real human write a heartfelt note will be the one people love.
It is perfectly normal to feel a little bit worried when the world changes. But instead of hiding under the covers, we can learn to ride the wave. Upskilling for AI sounds like a big task, but it really just means “learning a few new tricks.”
You don’t need to know how to build a computer to use one. Just like you don’t need to be a mechanic to drive a car!
When you show a company that you aren’t afraid of the “potato machine” and that you are ready to learn how to use it, you become the person they want to hire.
I want to speak to you from the heart for a moment. If you feel like the world is moving too fast, you are not alone. Even the people running the big companies are sometimes surprised by how quickly things are changing.
The secret is to remember that the truth about AI is that it is just a tool. It is a hammer. A hammer can’t build a house by itself; it needs a person to swing it. Right now, companies are looking for the best “builders” who know how to use the new “hammers.”
If you have been let go, please know that it isn’t because you aren’t a good worker. It’s because the “kitchen” you were in decided to change its menu. There is another kitchen out there that is looking for exactly what you have to offer—especially your kindness, your experience, and your willingness to try.
We are currently in a period that some call the “Great Reshuffle.” It is like a giant game of musical chairs. When the music stops, some people find that their old chair is gone. But when they look around, they see a brand-new, more comfortable chair waiting for them in a different spot.
Companies are hiring for “AI Literacy.” This just means they want people who understand what AI can and cannot do.
By knowing the difference, you become a valuable “Manager of AI.” You are the boss of the machine, not the other way around.

To wrap it all up, the reason companies are firing and hiring at the same time is that they are changing their “engines.” They are letting go of people who only did tasks that machines can now handle, but they are desperately looking for people who can guide those machines and provide the “human soul” that technology lacks.
It is a time of big change, but change always brings opportunity. By focusing on your unique human talents—like your heart, your imagination, and your ability to talk to others—you will find that the future isn’t something to fear. It is a new story that you get to help write.
